The Materials That Will Shape India’s Future

Building Resilient Value Chains for a Competitive and Sustainable Economy

As India accelerates its journey towards becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse and a leader in the clean energy transition, a new strategic imperative is emerging—the need to secure and build resilient value chains for advanced materials, critical minerals, and strategic metals.

The technologies driving the future—electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, aerospace, defence, telecommunications, and advanced manufacturing—depend on a diverse range of materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, copper, rare earth elements, titanium, tungsten, silicon, advanced ceramics, graphene, composites, and superalloys. These materials are no longer simply industrial inputs; they have become strategic assets that will shape economic competitiveness, technological leadership, and national resilience.

The global race to secure these resources has intensified significantly in recent years. Countries are actively pursuing mineral partnerships, investing in overseas mining assets, strengthening domestic exploration, expanding refining capabilities, and promoting recycling and circular economy models. Supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic and evolving geopolitical tensions have reinforced the importance of trusted and diversified value chains for critical materials.

For India, this presents both a challenge and a remarkable opportunity.

India’s rapidly expanding manufacturing base, ambitious renewable energy targets, growing electric mobility ecosystem, and semiconductor aspirations will require a secure and sustainable supply of critical minerals and advanced materials. At the same time, the country has the opportunity to move beyond being merely a consumer of these resources to becoming an important global hub for processing, value addition, advanced materials manufacturing, innovation, and technology development.

Realising this vision requires an integrated approach. While securing access to mineral resources remains important, equal attention must be given to strengthening downstream capabilities in refining, advanced materials processing, recycling, product manufacturing, and research and development. Building resilient ecosystems across the entire value chain—from exploration to high-value manufacturing—will be essential for long-term competitiveness.

Advanced materials are emerging as one of the defining technologies of the next industrial revolution. Graphene is opening new possibilities in electronics and energy storage. Advanced ceramics are enabling applications in aerospace, defence, and high-temperature manufacturing. Carbon fibre composites are transforming mobility and renewable energy systems, while superalloys remain indispensable for aviation, power generation, and strategic industries. Continued investment in materials science, product innovation, and commercialisation will determine which nations lead the industries of tomorrow.

Equally important is the transition towards sustainable and circular value chains. Responsible mining, resource efficiency, recycling, urban mining, and recovery of valuable materials from end-of-life products are becoming central to resource security. Innovation will play a decisive role in this transformation. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence for mineral exploration, advanced extraction techniques, digital technologies, robotics, material informatics, and next-generation recycling processes are reshaping the global materials ecosystem. 

No single stakeholder can build these capabilities alone. Strengthening India’s position in advanced materials and critical minerals requires coordinated action across policy, industry, research, finance, and international partnerships. It also demands continuous dialogue to identify emerging opportunities, address challenges, and align national priorities with global developments.

Recognising the strategic importance of this sector, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organising its Annual Summit on Advanced Materials, Critical Minerals, and Metals on 11 September 2026 at. With the theme “Building Resilient Value Chains for a Sustainable and Competitive Future,” the Summit will bring together senior policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, technology experts, and global stakeholders to deliberate on strengthening India’s capabilities across advanced materials, critical minerals, and strategic metals. Discussions will focus on mineral security, resilient value chains, geopolitics, international partnerships, and emerging opportunities across batteries and mobility, electronics and semiconductors, defence, aerospace, renewable energy, energy storage, and other strategic sectors.

As part of this initiative, CII is also developing a Compendium on Advanced Materials, Critical Minerals, and Metals that will capture India’s evolving ecosystem, global trends, policy developments, technological advancements, and industry best practices. The Compendium aims to serve as a valuable knowledge resource for policymakers, industry, researchers, and other stakeholders, while fostering collaboration and supporting India’s vision of building resilient, innovation-driven, and globally competitive value chains.

The future will belong to nations that not only secure strategic materials but also create the technologies, partnerships, and industrial ecosystems that transform them into engines of economic growth. India has the opportunity to lead this transformation, and the time to build that future is now.
