India’s Diversity: A Strength for Nation-Building and Economic Growth

India marks 80 years of Independence this year, and we, as proud citizens, celebrate the story of a nation’s transformational journey driven by resilience, innovation, and collective determination. India’s Independence Day commemorates not only the freedom attained in 1947, but also the ideals that have driven India’s progress rooted in unity, diversity, values, and an unwavering commitment to nation-building.

At the heart of this progress lies a country that is home to thousands of distinct communities, rich artistic traditions, hundreds of languages, diverse cuisines, vibrant festivals, and cultural practices. India is known for its vibrancy and cultural richness, with a linguistic landscape that includes over 120 languages and numerous mother tongues. Yet, despite this extraordinary plurality, we remain united by a shared identity and common aspirations.

In this spirit, as we commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram this year, the nation is coming together to honour its legacy and its place in the hearts of the citizens. The National Song is more than a patriotic slogan. It is an expression of gratitude and reverence for our motherland that transcends geography, language, religion, and culture, while reminding us of the shared values that bind over 1.4 billion Indians together.

Similarly, nothing symbolises our shared identity more profoundly than our National Flag, the Tiranga, which embodies the ideals of courage, peace, truth, and progress. Its colours, saffron, white, and green, along with the Ashoka Chakra at the centre, represent the values that guide India’s journey. Each time we witness it flying high, it reminds us that though our identities are diverse, our destiny is one.

Building on this shared sentiment, the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has further deepened this bond. Launched by the Ministry of Culture in 2022, the campaign saw over 7.5 crore selfies with the National Flag last year, in addition to the involvement of over 9 lakh Tiranga Volunteers who mobilised citizens nationwide.

This year, the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is dedicated to the spirit of 150 years of Vande Mataram, celebrating patriotism, pride in the Tiranga, and the love for the motherland embodied in our National Song.

Beyond its cultural and emotional significance, India’s diversity is also a strength that has emerged as an economic advantage for the country at large. India’s cultural and creative industries, like handicrafts, handlooms, tourism, wellness, cuisine, films, theatre and the arts, are driving livelihoods, entrepreneurship, exports, and soft power. In turn, our diversity fuels new ideas, wider markets, and stronger collaborations, giving India a decisive competitive edge in a connected world.

Looking ahead, the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 sets the pace towards achieving development across all sectors and establishing India as a global power. While economic growth, infrastructure and reforms remain the core themes for the country, inclusive growth, sustainability, innovation, and equal opportunity will also be fundamental to the nation’s progression journey towards a developed and future-ready India.

Importantly, India enters the next chapter of its journey with robust economic strength behind it. The real GDP growth was 7.7 per cent in FY 2025–26, while India’s combined merchandise and services exports reached a record USD 860.09 billion. The Economic Survey 2025–26 also highlights the growing transformation of Indian Industry, with medium and high-technology activities accounting for 46.3 per cent of the country’s manufacturing value added. Taken together, these achievements reflect the growing capabilities of Indian enterprise and the economy.

Nevertheless, achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 will require us to build on these strengths with a shared sense of purpose. Industry, academia, civil society and citizens will have to work together to translate economic progress into broad-based national development.

By harnessing the power of unity in diversity, we can accelerate India’s growth journey to Viksit Bharat and build a nation that is prosperous, inclusive, and rooted in its values and shared aspirations.
