Building a Legacy: Bhubaneswar, Chennai, and Ahmedabad Lead India’s Sports Transformation Journey

India’s sports landscape is rapidly evolving, with cities across the country emerging as global sports hubs. A recent report by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Grant Thornton Bharat ‘Sports Cities of India 2024’, underscores the cities leading this transformation. The report evaluates key cities based on infrastructure development, athlete programs, fan engagement, and their readiness to host major international events, positioning India for a future bid to host the 2036 Olympics.

India’s Sports Cities: Bhubaneswar, Chennai, and Ahmedabad

The report identifies Bhubaneswar, Chennai, and Ahmedabad as pivotal players in India’s sports ecosystem. These cities are making significant strides in infrastructure, long-term athlete development, and international event hosting, putting India on the global sports map.

Bhubaneswar has become a benchmark for international sports venues, thanks to the Kalinga Sports Complex, which has successfully hosted the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup. The city’s investment in world-class facilities and ability to organize large-scale events has firmly established it as a key player in India’s sports development journey.

Chennai is rapidly progressing with its ambitious Global Sports City project. This initiative reflects the city’s vision to become a multi-sport hub, capable of hosting diverse international events. Chennai is also investing in athlete programs and infrastructure that integrate cutting-edge technology, positioning itself as a city with a forward-thinking sports development strategy.

Meanwhile, Ahmedabad continues to gain recognition for its massive Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium. The city’s commitment to sports infrastructure extends beyond cricket, as it invests in multi-purpose sports complexes and elite athlete programs. Ahmedabad’s continued growth underscores its potential as a key host for major global sporting events.

Driving Sports Infrastructure Development in India

The “Sports Cities of India 2024” report provides a comprehensive assessment of cities’ capabilities in transforming into world-class sports hubs, essential for India’s ambitious plans to host the Olympics and other major international events.

According to the report, India’s sports sector is evolving beyond infrastructure. The country is focusing on long-term athlete development and creating sustainable ecosystems through partnerships between government bodies, private enterprises, and national sports federations. This integrated approach is essential as India strengthens its sports infrastructure, promotes athlete engagement, and boosts fan participation.

The Rise of E-Sports and other emerging Sporting Trends

The report also highlights the increasing popularity of e-sports in India, particularly in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai. E-sports has seen exponential growth, driven by government recognition and corporate sponsorship. Major tournaments such as the ESL India Premiership have helped establish e-sports as a key component of India’s sports ecosystem, attracting millions of viewers and offering new career opportunities in gaming, streaming, and digital marketing.

E-sports, along with adventure sports, is becoming a significant driver of youth engagement in sports. The rise of these digital sports platforms complements traditional sports and expands the reach of India’s sporting culture to new audiences.

Government Support and Strategic Investments

The Indian government’s commitment to sports development is evident in its allocation of ₹3,442.32 crore in the Union Budget 2024-25. This investment focuses on both grassroots programs and elite athlete support, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sports development. The Khelo India initiative continues to be a driving force, with ₹900 crore earmarked for promoting sports at the grassroots level, identifying talent, and nurturing young athletes.

Collaboration between state governments, private enterprises, and sports bodies remains crucial in developing sustainable infrastructure and athlete development programs. The report emphasizes that strategic investments, along with innovations in technology and training, are positioning India to host world-class sporting events while fostering a vibrant, inclusive sports culture for future generations.

India’s journey to becoming a global sporting destination is well underway, with cities like Bhubaneswar, Chennai, and Ahmedabad leading the charge. With strategic planning, government support, and innovative development, the country is poised to become a global powerhouse in sports.
