India’s logistics sector is on the brink of a transformative journey, driven by a vision to become more efficient, integrated, digitally led, and significantly automated. With a focus on environmental sustainability and creating high-value employment opportunities, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has been at the forefront of this movement through its Institute of Logistics (CII-IL). The CII Institute of Logistics is dedicated to enhancing the competitiveness of India’s logistics industry, helping it achieve global recognition for best practices in supply chain management (SCM) and logistics.
Vision and Mission
The CII Institute of Logistics envisions itself as an International Centre of Excellence in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. This vision aligns with the broader national objective of positioning India’s logistics sector as a global leader. The Institute’s mission is to improve the logistics competitiveness of Indian industries by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and frameworks necessary to optimize their supply chains. By doing so, CII-IL aims to facilitate India’s rise as a preferred destination for global business, recognized for its best practices in logistics and supply chain management.
Strategic Roadmap
To realize this vision, CII-IL has developed a comprehensive roadmap that engages a wide range of stakeholders, including industry players, government agencies, educational institutions, and international organizations. The roadmap focuses on several key areas: multimodal logistics, digitalization, logistics outsourcing, standardization, and fostering startups in the logistics sector, all with an overarching emphasis on sustainability.
Multimodal logistics is a crucial component of this strategy, as it integrates various modes of transportation—road, rail, air, and sea—into a seamless network, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. Digitalization is another critical focus area, as it allows for the automation of logistics processes, improving accuracy and speed while reducing human error. By promoting logistics outsourcing, CII-IL encourages companies to leverage specialized expertise, further boosting efficiency and effectiveness. Standardization, meanwhile, ensures consistency and reliability across the logistics sector, which is vital for maintaining quality and meeting global benchmarks. Finally, the Institute actively supports startups in logistics, recognizing that innovation and new business models are key to driving the sector forward.
Key Offerings and Impact
CII-IL offers a wide range of services aimed at building capacity, enhancing skills, and promoting excellence in logistics and supply chain management. One of its primary offerings is education services, which include specialized training and certification programs designed to equip professionals with the latest knowledge and skills. To date, over 1.35 lakh professionals from 600 enterprises have benefited from these capacity-building activities, reflecting the Institute’s significant impact on the industry.
In addition to education, the Institute provides advisory services, helping organizations develop and implement effective supply chain strategies. Through its Supply Chain Maturity Model and in-house programs, CII-IL has served more than 100 organizations, enabling them to optimize their operations and achieve greater efficiency. The Institute also runs the WAREX Rating System, which certifies warehouses based on their adherence to best practices in logistics. So far, 21 million square feet of warehouse space has been certified under this system, demonstrating the Institute’s role in raising industry standards.
The Institute’s commitment to excellence is further highlighted by the Supply Chain and Logistics Excellence (SCALE) Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in the sector. These awards have seen participation from 230 companies, underscoring their significance as a benchmark for success in logistics. Furthermore, CII-IL’s impact extends to the academic sphere through its CII School of Logistics, where 300 students are currently pursuing their Master’s degrees. This educational initiative ensures that the next generation of logistics professionals is well-prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
CII-IL’s influence also reaches global organizations. Over 500 United Nations staff members across various missions have been trained and certified by the Institute, showcasing its international credibility and expertise. Moreover, the Institute has partnered with 80 educational institutions across India, further broadening its reach and impact.
Building the Future of Logistics in India
The CII Institute of Logistics is not just a participant in India’s logistics sector; it is a driving force behind its evolution. By focusing on multimodal logistics, digitalization, and sustainability, and by fostering innovation through education and advisory services, the Institute is shaping a future where India’s logistics sector is not only efficient and integrated but also a global leader. As the Institute continues to build capacity, set standards, and recognize excellence, it is playing a crucial role in ensuring that India meets its ambitious logistics goals and establishes itself as a key player on the world stage.
