CII’s Special Recognition of Law Firms for IP Excellence – under the CII Industrial IP Awards 2026

In an innovation-driven economy, intellectual property is no longer a back-end legal safeguard; it is a strategic enabler of growth, competitiveness, and value creation. Behind every robust patent portfolio, every well-managed prosecution strategy, and every carefully defended right lies the work of legal professionals who translate inventive activity into protected advantage. Law firms, particularly those with deep patent practice expertise, play a quiet but necessary role in this ecosystem.

It is in this spirit that the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has introduced a dedicated category for Law firms under the CII Industrial IP Awards 2026: Special Recognition of Law Firms. Building on the legacy of the CII Industrial IP Awards, which have recognized excellence in IP creation, protection, and commercialization since 2014, this initiative seeks to honour law firms that have demonstrated exceptional performance in patent-related legal services and contributed meaningfully to India’s journey towards a stronger IP-driven economy.

The recognition serves as a significant step towards celebrating contribution made by law firms in the intellectual property ecosystem. As India’s innovation landscape expands across manufacturing, technology, life sciences, digital services, and emerging sectors, the need for sophisticated IP support has grown in equal measure. Patent filing, prosecution, litigation, opposition handling, enforcement, and strategic advisory are no longer niche functions; they are critical components of the innovation lifecycle. Law firms are increasingly expected not only to manage filings and disputes, but also to advise on risk, commercial strategy, sector-specific challenges, and collaboration models that help ideas move from lab to market.

The Special Recognition of Law Firms has therefore been designed to spotlight professional excellence where it matters most: in the practical architecture of IP protection. The awards highlight best practices in patent filing, prosecution, litigation, and advisory; celebrate law firms delivering strong client outcomes; and promote the visibility of legal leaders shaping India’s evolving IP ecosystem. The emphasis is not simply on volume, but on quality, impact, and the broader contribution a firm makes to innovation capacity in the country.

Eligibility for the category has been kept focused and purpose driven. Indian law firms, whether boutique or full-service, that provide patent-related services are eligible to apply. The assessment framework considers achievements during the period April 2023 to March 2026 and looks at patent-related filings, litigation, opposition and enforcement experience, sector-specific leadership, contributions to IP awareness, policy or research, and collaboration with academia, startups, or public institutions. In other words, the awards aim to capture both the operational excellence of a firm and the value of ecosystem it creates.

The process has also been structured to ensure fairness and credibility. Applications undergo review and validation through a structured questionnaire, followed by expert panel assessment, jury-based scoring, participant feedback, shortlisting, and final selection by the CII Awards Jury. This multi-layered evaluation reflects the seriousness of the recognition and reinforces CII’s commitment to transparent, merit-based acknowledgement of excellence.

For participating law firms, the award offers more than a trophy. It offers national recognition, benchmarking feedback, visibility across India’s IP and innovation landscape, and a platform to showcase the strength of their patent practice. For the wider ecosystem, it sends an important signal: that high-quality legal service is a vital part of innovation policy, commercialization, and industrial growth.

As India continues to sharpen its innovation ambitions, the role of law firms will only become more significant. They are the translators of technical ingenuity into enforceable rights, the advisors who help enterprises navigate complex IP terrain, and the partners who support startups, MSMEs, academic institutions, and established industries alike. Recognising their contribution is therefore not just an award exercise; it is an acknowledgement of the legal infrastructure that underpins innovation.

CII’s Special Recognition of Law Firms under the Industrial IP Awards 2026 is an invitation to the profession to step forward, be counted, and be celebrated for the expertise it brings to India’s innovation economy. For law firms working at the intersection of law, technology, and strategy, this is an opportunity to gain deserved visibility and to share in a national conversation on building a stronger, more resilient IP culture.
