Design has gently evolved beyond mere aesthetics to become a quiet yet powerful force shaping the way we experience the world. It influences how products feel in our hands, how services respond to our needs, and how brands connect with us on a deeper level. In today’s experience-driven and technology-led landscape, design is not just seen, it is felt, lived, and remembered.
When thoughtfully integrated with intellectual property (IP), design takes on an even greater significance. It transitions from a creative endeavor into a valuable strategic asset—one that can be protected, nurtured, and scaled across markets. Intellectual property ensures that the originality and effort behind design are safeguarded, allowing creators and businesses to derive long-term value from their innovations. Together, design and IP form a powerful partnership, enabling ideas to move gracefully from imagination into meaningful, sustainable economic contributions.
Keeping the integration of Design & IP, we are pleased to mention that Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will convene the World Design & Intellectual Property Conference 2026 on 29th April 2026 at India Habitat Centre. Celebrating both World Design Day and World Intellectual Property Day, the conference captures a defining moment where creativity, innovation, and intellectual property converge to shape the future of global economies.
In 2026, design has evolved into a powerful strategic differentiator, while intellectual property (IP) ensures that innovation is protected, monetized, and scaled. India’s journey in this domain reflects remarkable progress, underpinned by policy reforms, a thriving startup ecosystem, and a renewed focus on design-led manufacturing.
According to the World Design Rankings (WDR), which evaluates countries based on the number and quality of international design awards received, India has steadily strengthened its global presence in recent years. The rankings highlight the country’s growing pool of award-winning designers and its expanding footprint across disciplines such as product, communication, and industrial design. This upward trajectory reflects India’s increasing participation and success in global design competitions, signalling a rising creative confidence and a maturing design ecosystem.
From an intellectual property perspective, recent data indicates that India continues its upward trajectory with now being the 6th largest patent filer. IP filings in the last five years have increased by44%, rising from 4,77,533 in 2020–21 to 6,89,991 in 2024–25. Our patent filings soared to a historic 1.43 lakh+ in FY 2025-26, marking a 30.2 per cent increase over last year, with over 69 per cent of patents filed domestically. The filings have been continuously increasing since 2016-17, when they were 45,444. It was 47,894 in 2027-28, 50,660 in 2018-19, 56,268 in 2019-20, 58,503 in 2020-21, 66,440 in 2021-22, 82,208 in 2022-23, and 92,163 in 2023-24.
India’s innovation performance is further validated by its steady climb in the Global Innovation Index 2025, where it remains within the top 40 economies globally and continues to rank 1st among lower-middle-income countries. These gains are driven by national initiatives promoting “Design in India,” digital transformation, and stronger IP awareness.
The CII conference will serve as a dynamic platform to deliberate on these achievements and chart the path ahead. By bringing together global experts, industry leaders, and policymakers, it aims to foster collaboration, inspire innovation, and reinforce the importance of protecting creative assets.
As the world increasingly values ideas over resources, India stands at a pivotal juncture. The 2026 conference is not merely an event; it is a celebration of India’s emergence as a global hub where design excellence and intellectual property together fuel sustainable growth, competitiveness, and future readiness.
