Transforming Manufacturing Through Lean Thinking & Digital Innovation
Global manufacturing is in the middle of its most significant transition in decades. Connected machines, IoT-enabled production lines, Manufacturing Execution Systems, digital twins and data-driven decision-making are changing how factories are designed, run and improved. Manufacturers globally are investing heavily in digital transformation, and Indian industry is no exception, with companies across automotive, engineering, electronics and pharmaceuticals backing smart factory capabilities.
While technology stands as a powerful enabler, experience from some of the world’s most successful manufacturers shows that it alone cannot deliver operational excellence. The true driver of sustainable manufacturing performance lies in combining digital innovation with strong operational fundamentals, as digitalization delivers results only when it is built on sound operational foundations.
Manufacturing is more than simply making things. The Japanese philosophy of MONOZUKURI, which combines “mono” (things) and “tsukuri” (the act of making), goes well beyond production and stands for a culture of craftsmanship, pride in making, respect for people, and the relentless pursuit of perfection through continuous improvement. Lean MONOZUKURI is the practical expression of this culture, and it has enabled Japanese industry to sustain productivity, quality, and flexibility across decades and business cycles.
Bringing Lean Principles and Digital Manufacturing Together
CII has consistently worked to bring these practices to Indian industry through its manufacturing initiatives, learning missions and Centres of Excellence. As factories digitalize, these fundamentals become more relevant as digital tools amplify whatever system they are placed in. Recognizing this, CII, in collaboration with the Lean MONOZUKURI Network JAPAN (ALMO-J), is organizing the Certificate Programme on Lean MONOZUKURI & Digital Manufacturing from 26 to 30 October 2026 in Japan. The programme is designed for manufacturing professionals who want to understand how lean principles and digital technologies work together to build efficient, agile and future-ready production systems. It will be useful to professionals driving digital transformation and responsible for productivity, quality and continuous improvement.
The curriculum blends classroom learning with practical application. Participants will cover Lean MONOZUKURI fundamentals, Kaizen, Just-in-Time (JIT), Jidoka, Value Stream Mapping, Lean Automation (LCA), IoT-enabled manufacturing visibility, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Interactive workshops, simulations and case studies keep the focus firmly on implementation rather than theory. The sessions will be led by experts from ALMO-J, who have decades of hands-on experience in lean manufacturing, digital engineering, TPM and IoT.
A key highlight of the programme is the factory visit to a leading Japanese manufacturing facility, offering participants first-hand exposure to the practical implementation of Lean MONOZUKURI, Lean Automation, TPM, and Digital Manufacturing, enabling participants to gain a deeper understanding.
Building Viksit Bharat Through Manufacturing Excellence
India has set itself the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, the vision of Viksit Bharat, and manufacturing sits at the centre of that ambition. As the country advances towards becoming a global manufacturing hub, organizations need professionals who can combine operational excellence with digital innovation.
For the Indian industry and for the professionals who will lead its factories through the coming decade, it is a step towards the manufacturing strength on which Viksit Bharat will be built. Global supply chains are diversifying, and India has a genuine window to establish itself as a trusted manufacturing partner to the world. Capturing that opportunity will depend less on capital and more on capability.
